  • rather, fairly
  • 这两个词共同的意思是“相当”。它们的区别在于:
    1.fairly主要用来修饰含有“好”的意思的形容词或副词,如good, well, attractive等; 而rather主要用来修饰含有“不好”的意思的形容词或副词,如bad, foolish, ugly等。例如:
    The red shirt fits you fairly well.这件红色衬衣挺适合你穿。
    2.如果被修饰的形容词或副词是中性的,如fair, cold, hot等,用fairly表示“赞同,赞赏”; 而用rather则表示“反对,不喜欢”。试比较:
    今天天气相当冷。
    It is fairly cold today.(表示满意)
    It is rather cold today.(表示不满意)
    3.不定冠词可以放在rather之前或之后,但只能放在fairly之前。例如:
    He is rather a stupid man.他是个相当蠢的人。
    It is a rather good film.这是部很好的电影。
    She is a fairly clever girl.她是个很聪明的女孩。
    4.rather可以用在alike, like, similar, different等词和形容词比较级前,意思是“有点”; 而fairly不能这样用。例如:

    5.当rather用来修饰含有“好”的意思的形容词或副词时,意思接近very,在语气上比fairly强。
    6.rather可以放在like, enjoy, love, respect等动词前,表示一种出乎意料的喜欢,或用来加强语气; 而fairly不能这样用。例如:
